Hotplug under Debian/KDE/Linux

Hotplug and autoconfiguration of removable devices under Debian/KDE/Linux

This quick article will explain you how to install hotplug support for CD and USB flash key under Debian using KDE 3.4. Once finished, you CD and card will appear on the desktop once inserted and disappear once removed.

First, you need to install the following packages:

Once you have installed those packages, you need to add the users you want to have the hotplut facilities to the plugdev group, as explained in /usr/share/doc/pmount/README.Debian.

Relog and enjoy. You can now type media:/ in konqueror. If you add a CD or a USB key, it will appear. Thanks to pmount, it will mount automatically if you click on it. Then, you can right-click on it to unmount a CD or safely remove a USB key.

If you configure the desktop to show unmonted CDs and removable media devices, they will appear on the desktop.

If you think Debian is boring to configure, have a look at Kubuntu, a Debian-based distribution where all this is already done.
